    You may want to rething. Gas engines run at about 3000 rpm at max HP.

    1st – just get a chain – and lubircation system designed for the application.

    Small gas engines (like lawn mower) are typically rated at 3600 rpm, and will not even run at 1000 rpm.

    A bicycle chain use not designed to with stand the number of cycles that a gasoline engine will cause. A bicyclist may be able to reach 100 rpm. A small gas engine is going to be running at around 40X that. Keep in mind that the chain see cycling entering each sprocket and coming off each sprocket, not in between. This generates heat, which has to be removed.

    Bicycle chains are lacking an adequate lubrication system for the application. Can you spray it with oil continually?

    Firstly, generators typically turn at 3600 rpm; some go at submultiples such as 1800 or 1200 rpm, but you aren’t likely to encounter such. Much of the tension on a transmission chain would be from centrifugal force rather than the load. There is no way that I would use a bike chain for this; this is a job for v-belts (or direct drive), which are a lot less hazardous if they break.
